In the Philippines, natural disasters have had a devastating impact on the country's society and economy. There have been approximately 20,000 people killed or missing with a total of 75 million people affected and economic losses of 182.9 billion pesos in the 10-year period since 2005.
The target city of Davao City has suffered from frequent floods in recent years: 30 people were killed by floods in the Davao and Matina rivers in 2011 and 22,911 households were affected by flooding due to Typhoon Vinta in 2017.
Against this background and at the request of DPWH, a project has been undertaken to formulate the M/P for flood control measures in Davao City, conduct feasibility studies on priority projects, and strengthen DPWH's capacity to formulate the M/P.
