The Shiraito Falls are registered as one of the assets making up a World Cultural Heritage Site. The location is also designate by the Japanese government as a place of scenic beauty and a natural monument. The bridge is a pedestrian bridge re-built across the Shiraito Falls, and was planned and designed after lengthy discussions with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in parallel with the World Cultural Heritage Site listing.
The project was for the design of a pedestrian bridge spanning the center of a world heritage site, and its design and planning involved careful consideration to ensure a bridge design suitable for such a site. To minimize changes to the topography, a structural form not found elsewhere in Japan known as a balanced flat arch was adopted. The design won a Good Design Award as well as awards from the Japan Prestressed Concrete Institute and Japan Concrete Institute. Moreover, a paper submitted to the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) concerning the bridge design and a related oral presentation met with a favorable response.
